Bundaberg Jazz Club:
The April meeting at ‘Across the Waves’ was another tremendous success for Bundaberg’s Friends of Jazz.
The music of ‘Sassy Jazz’ vocalist Robyn Brown and her talented musicians gave us an elegant afternoon with a style of jazz not often seen around these parts. Besides a selection of older standards and modern favourites, mature members of a discerning audience also enthusiastically received pieces from Wayne Shorter, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.
Robyn chose wisely her backing musicians to complement her elegantly soothing voice. All are talented performers in their own right and collectively the ensemble forms an impressive group of improvisational ability. Arron Bool’s sensitive guitar, Tim Finnigan on double bass, Dave Merry contemporising with sax and flute; Jason Bray’s drumming in duet with Robyn scatting, and the piano artistry of Marnix van Bruggen delighted our audience.
Our Sunday afternoon presentation was the culmination of the ‘Sassy Jazz’ successful weekend ‘Fraser Coast Tour’. This Sunshine Coast-based group celebrated Hervey Bay Jazz Club’s ninth birthday on Friday, followed by a Saturday afternoon session in Maryborough and later an informal “Meet the Musos” dinner at “The Waves” hosted by the Bundaberg Friends of Jazz committee.
We’re eagerly looking forward to the next time.
